Since its founding in 1995, the Foundation has granted more than $260 million to nonprofit organizations and initiatives focused on Aging, Child and Family Development, Education, Health and Jewish Life in the seven-county Metro Denver area – recently adding a cross-programmatic community action overlay of support for nonprofit organizations serving immigrants, refugees and communities vulnerable to discrimination and hate crimes. In addition to strategic grantmaking, the Foundation drives systems change as a thought-leader and convener locally, regionally and nationally. The Foundation helps individuals, families and groups define and achieve their philanthropic goals across a wide range of issue areas while stewarding, investing and managing designated funds, donor-advised funds, legacy gifts and endowments.
Rose Community Foundation is seeking an experienced, talented and enthusiastic communications professional to develop, manage and implement communications, marketing, public relations and outreach strategies. With the goal of developing a more outwardly facing institutional profile to advance our mission on all fronts, the Vice President will work with the President and CEO and other key staff members to develop a multi-media strategic communications plan highlighting the work of the Foundation and our grantees and its impact on our community, to amplify the Foundation’s thought leadership on key issues and policy matters, and to promote a multi-generational culture of philanthropy. In addition to strategic thought partnership with the President and CEO and the Foundation’s Program and Philanthropic Services departments and leading the small communications and outreach team, the Vice President will play a key, hands-on role in implementing external and internal communications strategies by writing and editing content across multiple platforms and building key media and community relationships. In short, this person must be a thinker, planner and a doer.
The Vice President of Communications and Outreach will:
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for all external and internal Foundation communications, media relations, branding, marketing and outreach activities, while directing the strategy, planning, development, management and budget for the communications department
- Oversee and participate in the production, writing and editing of content for all institutional communications, including website, publications (written and electronic), press releases, social media, speeches, advertisements and internal communications
- Lead and manage the Communications staff; manage vendors and contractors
- Serve on the cross-departmental executive team and participate in relevant affinity groups
- Collaborate with Program, Philanthropic Services and Initiatives staff to create communications strategies and marketing materials that are consistent with Foundation messaging standards and engage internal and external stakeholders, including staff, trustees, committee members, funders and partners, donors and prospects, grantees, community leaders and relevant affinity groups
- Direct and perform proactive and reactive media and public relations activities including pitches, creation and dissemination of news releases, responses to media inquiries and cultivation of key media relationships
- Develop communications strategies to amplify the Foundation’s advocacy and policy work
- Evaluate advertising and sponsorship opportunities
- Provide strategic support to Foundation events and forums
- Stay abreast of innovations and best practices in the field and sector
- Participate in the Foundation’s forthcoming strategic planning process
Education, Experience and Skills
We are seeking a Vice President of Communications and Outreach with a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and at least 10 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or a relevant field. He or she will have demonstrated communications leadership experience in a multi-faceted organization, a proven record of developing, motivating and managing professional staff and a sophisticated understanding of available communications tools. Technologically adept and forward-thinking, he or she must be a multi-channel communicator with expertise across digital, social and traditional platforms and have a strong record of sound judgement in managing and strengthening the image of a high-profile organization or brand. Deep knowledge of the Greater Denver community and the nonprofit, philanthropic or public sector is preferred.
The Vice President will have proven experience developing, implementing and managing strategic communications plans. Demonstrated experience using online platforms to communicate and increase market exposure is required. He or she will have exceptional writing, editing, oral communication and presentation skills with an unparalleled attention to detail and expert copy-editing skills. Excellent project management skills with a history of managing complex projects, delivering quality work on time and within budgetary guidelines. Proven experience hiring and managing outside consultants/contractors preferred.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have expert knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word), Internet research and social media platforms as well as experience with relational database and CRM software, email marketing systems, project management software and website content management systems.

The Vice President will be a self-confident professional with highly developed interpersonal skills and a propensity to take initiative and be proactive. The Vice President will be a creative and strategic thinker. Highly organized and systematic, he or she will take pride in ensuring every detail is explored and executed correctly. The ideal candidate will work quickly and effectively with multiple tasks from multiple sources with ease – demonstrating talent for distilling, synthesizing and packaging diverse and complex information. An affinity for nonprofit, policy and philanthropic work are musts. Valuing excellence and reputation, the Vice President must be passionate about the Foundation’s mission, vision and values as well as who we are, what we do and where we are going.
The Vice President of Communications and Outreach supervises two full-time employees and reports to the President and CEO. This position does not have administrative support.
