Summary Description

The Director of Development is responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating fundraising and development activities that reflect and support the mission and priorities of Code of Support Foundation (COSF), with a focus towards corporate and major gifts, grants, and individual giving. The ideal candidate is a flexible and creative person who welcomes challenges and understands the importance of ongoing change through research, planning, and action; has the ability to mentor, manage and inspire others; has the ability to multitask with enthusiasm and a collaborative spirit.  

The candidate must be able to manage people, process, deadlines, and budget while adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization. The candidate must also be able to get along with peers, subordinates and management and maintain a positive and constructive attitude while solving problems. The candidate is expected to act, manage and implement activities in accordance with best practices as defined by AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) AFP Fundraising Policies and Procedures

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage, in consultation with Executive and Deputy Director, a comprehensive, annual fundraising plan complete with performance metrics to meet an organizational projected budget

  • Oversee administrative aspects pertaining to Development to include:  determination of and record keeping of prospective funding sources (foundations, corporate, major donor) and donor acknowledgment/cultivation

  • Along with third-party vendor(s), oversee segmentation of the donor database using giving history, wealth assessment and other relevant research to optimize appeal personalization with regard to gift amount, frequency, and donative preferences

  • Implement and manage a Moves Management Strategy that seeks to convert individual donors to monthly donors and existing donors to higher giving levels

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and acknowledge mid-level donors through email, phone calls, in-person communications, and donor events.  Collaborate with the ED to identify and execute similar activities for major donors and prospects

  • Oversee the tracking and preparation of reports for key fundraising benchmarks and activity indicators including response rates, retention, attrition, average gift, frequency, donor lifetime value, gross and net revenue, production costs, cost per dollar raised, and return on investment

  • Collaborate with Deputy Director and Marketing adviser - to create, produce and distribute communications and collateral content - for different donor segments including highly personalized direct response mail/quarterly appeals, email, telemarketing, website, and social media appeals, according to the schedule identified in the annual marketing plan

  • Work closely with Board of Trustees and Fundraising Committee to identify, manage and leverage their respective networks (to include board sponsored cultivation events/salons). Serve as the staff liaison to the Fundraising Committee of the Board of Trustees, to include monthly update calls

  • Develop an Endowment Fund and Planned Giving program

  • Use directories, online services, trade publications, and other sources to research potential donors and funding sources

  • Oversee registration and participation in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC);

  • Review monthly Financial Reports and communicate any questions and/or discrepancies to the ED/DD and Finance Committee

  • Any other duties, as assigned

  • Manage a Development Specialist


  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred

  • A minimum of five-seven years of experience as a development professional, with emphasis on major gift solicitations, corporate sponsorships, and individual giving

  • A minimum of three years of management level experience in a non-profit development department

  • Minimum of five years planning and directing a comprehensive direct response fundraising program, with demonstrated success

  • Minimum of two years comprehensively using Salesforce based donor management software or a similar platform.

  • A solid understanding of the functional operations of nonprofit organizations (familiarity with veteran space is a plus)

  • Working knowledge of fundraising concepts, proposal writing, and donor software (preferably Salesforce) and reporting, including peer-to-peer fundraising software

  • Proven track record of success in fundraising

  • Experience with corporate, major gifts, and direct mail solicitation

  • Extensive experience interacting with high-level contacts, including board members and corporate representatives

  • Ability to translate strategic planning into entrepreneurial execution and work with multiple stakeholders to solve complex problems successfully

  • Must be highly organized, give attention to detail, and work resourcefully and efficiently under deadlines. Strong understanding of computer technology including Microsoft Office and database programs

  • Experience coordinating and educating volunteers in fundraising activities

  • Knowledge of fundraising regulations and fund accounting

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal skills

  • Flexibility to travel around the region and to other areas of the country; weekend and evening work will occasionally be required
